STARS Driver |
Amy Elizabeth Prowell (born 8th June 2005) is a Welsh STARS Kobalt Tools Truck Series driver from St Asaph, Wales.
Early Career
Prowell was born into a racing family in St Asaph, Wales to father, two-time BTCC champion Karl Prowell and mother Diana Prowell, who had previously worked as a grid girl for her husbands team. At the age of just 7, Prowell got her start in racing, joining the same karting league that her older brother, Harry, was taking part in at the time. While her brother's results were stellar, the younger Prowell struggled in the league, and after one season with only 2 top 15 finishes, while her brothers career progressed, she decided to stop racing.
In 2016, just three years later, Prowell got back into karting in the same league with much better results, while her brother was in the Ginetta Juniors series. Both drivers earned championships in their respective seasons. Prowell stayed in karting for another few years, eventually winning a title on a national scale at the age of 13. Prowell got the call up to Ginetta Juniors, while her brother had finally made his break into the British Touring Car Championship.
2020-2022: British Touring Cars and Support Ranks
Prowell began her Ginetta Juniors career by earning a weekend sweep of Rookie class wins at Brands Hatch, with a best overall finish of 5th. Prowell earned her first overall victory in the first race at Oulton Park, but just hours after her inaugural victory, her brother was seriously injured in an accident in the BTCC race. Prowell ended up withdrawing from the next couple of race weekends as a result of her brothers accident, but returned for the race weekend at Knockhill, where she scored two more victories. Prowell ended the season 6th in points. At the age of 15, Prowell was called up to drive in the MINI Challenge for 2021 after her form impressed many BTCC teams.
Prowell initially struggled to find her footing in the higher powered MINIs but at the same place of her first Ginetta Junior victory, Oulton Park, Prowell broke through and scored a weekend sweep of the series. This started a big surge in momentum for Prowell, as she ended up taking home wins at every race meeting, including an incredible weekend sweep at Brands Hatch which saw her take home the championship in the season. With her fantastic showing, Prowell's team took a chance and promoted her to the British Touring Car Championship, despite only being 16 years old.
In the opening BTCC race weekend of 2022, the entire field faced a challenge with rain marring qualifying. Prowell managed to excel in the conditions, taking home the pole position for her first start. Weather was much better the next day and the dry conditions did not suit Prowell's car, and she dropped to 8th in the first race, then going on to score a 12th place finish in the second race. However, the reverse grid race saw number 12 drawn, and Prowell was given the pole position with no success ballast. More fortunes came Prowell's way as there was a downpour just before the race. Prowell looked comfortable in the wet as she became the youngest driver to win a BTCC race in her first race weekend.
Prowell went on to score three more wins over the season, two at Croft and one at Knockhill as she finished 7th in the championship. BTCC and STARS team owner Quinton Young noticed her good form, and offered Prowell a trial in stock car racing with potential to end up in the STARS ranks. Prowell ended up racing at Langley Speedway in the same race that Joshua Sanders was injured in. Prowell impressed in her race scoring a 5th place finish. In her next race at Orange Show Speedway, Prowell took a comfortable win. After a couple more starts, and good results in Late Model racing, Quinton Young picked Prowell to drive in the Kobalt Tools Truck Series.
2023: Jenkins-Young Motorsports
Prowell started off her first STARS speedweeks by winning the AAS Buffalo Wild Wings Pro Cup season opener at New York and finishing second in the KTTS race. Prowell continued to show her potential with a second place finish at Watkins Glen, finishing behind her best friend Lillie Corden. Prowell took another top 5 finish in her duel at Riverside Park before taking home her first KTTS victory at Richmond in her 5th start. Prowell also made select LIS starts, finishing 22nd at Watkins Glen and suffering a hard crash at Pocono. Prowell ran well in the LIS race at Daytona but ended up finishing 35th, before DNQing for the race at Sawmill.
Prowell's consistent good form saw her lock herself into the KTTS playoffs at Orlando International Superspeedway. The next day, in the LIS race, she scored her first career top 5 and top 10 finish in LIS competition, finishing 4th, and being a factor for the win until the end. Prowell went on to win the regular series championship ahead of Yoshiko Tsushima and AJ Stratton, but her form dropped off at the playoffs began in the KTTS series, while her form seemed to peak in LIS, with another top 10 finish at Chicagoland. Prowell fell out of contention for the KTTS championship at ISM Raceway. Prowell ended up 6th in the drivers championship, but her efforts were enough to see her team win the owners championship, sharing the championship with the #66 team. In the LIS race at Las Vegas, Prowell scored another top 10 finish with another 6th place finish.
2024; ATK Motorsports
Jenkins-Young Racing announced that they were not renewing Prowell's contract after the 2023 season as the team and Prowell disagreed with where she should race in 2024, with Prowell insisting she was ready for a full-time LIS car, but with the team planning to move up series champion Harper Bradshaw and Emi Satou instead of Prowell. As a result, ATK Motorsports swooped in for Prowell, offering her a full-time drive, taking over the #21 car (previously the #82 car) from Maddie Anderson.
Personal Life
Prowell is one of the few openly gay drivers in the field. Currently, Prowell resides in Orlando, Florida with her friend and teammate Lillie Corden.
Prowell has said she is "theatre crazy", visiting the theatre in whatever free time she has. Prowell is also proficient in playing the piano and the violin, and still keeps up with her musical practices every day.
Prowell is known for her good sense of humor, but is also known for her kindness towards others. Other drivers have noted that she tends to keep a cool head about her, but she has been seen to vent her frustrations at times.
Prowell is one of the taller female drivers in the STARS garage, measuring in at 5'8".
